This comprehensive and stunning collection of objects comes to the Frick as part of an eight-city international tour of the collection of the Delaware Art Museum, which holds the most significant collection of Pre-Raphaelite works outside Great Britain. The Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood was formed in 1848 by William Holman Hunt (1827-1910), John Everett Millais (1829-1896), and Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882). They took their name from what they felt was a more direct and honest period of art history - the time before Renaissance master Raphael. Using the bright jewel-like colors and close observation of detail typical of early Renaissance art, they strove to work directly from nature and avoid painterly brushwork and contrived, academic compositions. Their work, often taking as its subject matter themes from mythology, history, Arthurian legends, and classical literature, provided the genesis of the Arts and Crafts movement and was an important counterpoint to the Industrial Revolution. Included in the exhibition are a large group of oils by Rossetti, as well as works by Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898), Fredrick Sandys (1829-1904), Ford Madox Brown (1821-1893), Hunt, Millais and others. Complementing the two-dimensional works are decorative arts that illustrate their connection to the Arts and Crafts movement, including furniture, jewelry, ceramics, and metalwork.
