The phenomenon of the coal company town will be studied, showing the advantages and disadvantages for both the company and the employees.

Objectives

Students will: 1. Use a Pennsylvania map to identify the Anthracite Region and examine how the distribution of anthracite coal and topography contributed to the isolation of mining of mining towns. 2. Explain the advantages to a coal company of operating a coal patch town. 3. Ascertain the effects of the coal patch town on the lives of the workers and their families. 4. Learn how the distribution of housing can create ethnic neighborhoods.
