This text provides a succinct description of Washington Crossing the Delaware.

Gifford, Edward S. The American Revolution in the Delaware Valley. Philadelphia, Pa.: Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution, 1976.

This excellent study contains a wealth of observations from diaries, letters and reminiscences and offers probably the best starting point for any serious student.

Ketchum, Richard M. The Winter Soldiers. New York: Henry Holt & Co., 1999.

Ketchum describes the physical and mental anguish suffered by colonial soldiers culminating in the battles at Trenton and Princeton.

Scheer, George F. "Why Washington Stood Up in the Boat" in American Heritage.1964.

Scheer presents a good overview of the history behind Leutze's painting.
