Below are a few biographical facts about the Pennsylvanians being honored during this lesson.

Michael Strank

  • One of the men who took part in the famous raising of the United States flag on Iwo Jima

  • Born in Czechoslovakia, but grew up in Franklin County, Pennsylvania

  • Highly regarded by his fellow Marines

  • Killed in action on March 1, 1945

Helen Richey

  • Native of McKeesport, Pennsylvania

  • Discriminated against because she was a woman pilot

  • 1st woman to pilot a commercial airliner

  • 1st woman flight instructor to train army pilots

  • In World War II, the commandant of the American wing of the British Air Transport Authority

  • Member of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots

Daisy Lampkin

  • Born in Reading, Pennsylvania

  • NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) National Field Secretary (1935-1947)

  • Used organizational skills to raise $2 million worth of war bonds to help the war effort

  • Charter Member of the National Council of Negro Women

  • Vice President of the Pittsburgh Courier, a prominent, influential African-American newspaper of the day. The newspaper encouraged African Americans to fight in the war so that they would receive better treatment (equality) at home after the war.

  • Contributed to the suffrage movement (President of the Lucy Stone Suffrage League)

  • Recipient of the Eleanor Roosevelt- -Mary McLeod Bethune World Citizenship Award
