Remembering WWII Through Memorials
Extensions

1. There is a program called Save Outdoor Sculpture! (Girl Scouts Patch Program), in which students can take an interest in a specific statue in the community that is in disrepair, learn about environmental damage that can occur to outdoor sculptures, study conservation techniques, and fund raise to help to bring the sculpture back into top form. You may wish to pursue this as a class activity. For more information and a downloadable packet see Save Outdoor Sculpture! 2. Aside from the United States Marine Memorial, all the examples of memorials given in this lesson are located in Pennsylvania. There are several memorials pertaining to World War II located in Washington, D.C. Take a trip to Washington, D.C. and explore the World War II Memorial. Students can critique its design and discover its purpose. Or tour the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and explore how it represents a certain time period in history. 3. Did your students have unanswered questions or want to learn more about the life of the individuals they studied? Encourage them to research the biographies of these Pennsylvanians. 4. Students have learned about the experiences of several Pennsylvanians during World War II. Have them create a simple questionnaire and conduct an interview with someone they know who lived through World War II. 5. Did your students design a memorial that should be created or pursued? Have students create a model of the memorial, take a photograph of the model, and write a letter to the local government for its consideration.
