One-Room Schoolhouse in Pennsylvania
Extensions

1. Read the short story, "The Fun They Had," by Isaac Asimov. This story, set in the future when ALL students are educated at home via a cyber-school-like setting, describes a young girl's discovery of a "primary source" detailing students" experiences in schools like those of today, and her envy of those students for "the fun they had." Students could compare the THREE educational experiences and discuss/write appropriate responses.) 2. The Cumberland County Historical Society has a traveling trunk on the one-room schoolhouse. As an enhancement to this lesson, call and have the travel trunk items on hand. In particular, consider using the trunk at the three learning stations you have set up. Items in the trunk include slates and slate pencils, quill and fountain pens, McGuffey's schoolbooks, "fire wood," school clothes, lunch pail, dunce caps, and recess games. To contact the Cumberland County Historical Society call 717-249-7610. 3. Have students make their own quill and try writing with it. Directions can be found at http://www.nhhistory.org/edu/support/nhgrowingup/quillpens.pdf. 4. Students can reenact a day in the life of a one-room schoolhouse. See this website Pioneer Sholes School Teacher's Manual http://www.pioneersholesschool.org/pages/manual/introduction.html for ideas of activities with students.
