1. Have students research the length of time it would take to travel across the state from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia throughout the history of Pennsylvania using various modes of transportation. It should include walking, stagecoach, wagon, canals, railroads and automobiles. Have each create a chart, map or diagram to compare the results. 2. Have students research a particular era in Pennsylvania's transportation history and write a summary of how the physical features of the landscape helped and hindered its development. 3. Have students research the settlement patterns of the state and analyze how changes in transportation, especially the crossing the Allegheny Mountains, influenced these patterns. Students should create a chart highlighting these changes.
