When the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Pittsburgh from Carlow, Ireland, in 1843, they came with a simple yet boundless mission: to serve the poor, the sick and the uneducated. They established numerous orphanages, schools and the Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. During Pittsburgh's economic boom in the 1920s, prominent civic leaders urged the Sisters of Mercy to establish a Catholic college for women. Mount Mercy College opened on September 24, 1929. By 1969, the Sisters of Mercy had established a large number of Mount Mercy schools throughout the U.S. To preserve the unique identity of the institution in Pittsburgh, Sister Kathleen Healy proposed to the Board of Trustees and the faculty that the college's name be changed to Carlow College. The transition was approved by the Board of Trustees and the Pennsylvania Department of Education approved the change. In 2004, Carlow's strategic plan to achieve university status was realized. Carlow University was born. Today, Carlow offers more than 40 undergraduate majors and several graduate programs.
