"The Scientist and The Prince: Two Interesting Early Pennsylvania Immigrants

Discovering something big in your own backyard is a pretty neat thing. How about "finding" one of the world's greatest enlightenment scientists or a Prince who became a Priest instead of a king? The students will discover these two fascinating immigrants and learn a lot about their lives and why they came to the keystone state.

Objectives

Students will be able to: 1. Identify the places of origin and the importance of these immigrants selected by reading secondary and primary sources on each. 2. Identify the reasons these people immigrated to America. 3. Identify facts associated with the lives of Joseph Priestley and Father Smith (Prince Demetrius Gallitzin). 4. Discuss what made Pennsylvania the place these immigrants selected to settle. 5. Analyze their importance to the state's history. 6. Identify the obstacles in their immigration into the infant Commonwealth.
