1. Have students read a month of Lewis's journal from Public Broadcasting Service (PBS Online) "The Journals," Lewis and Clark: Inside the Corps. and list any medical illnesses or procedures taking place. Have students write a one-to-two page journal entry of their own reflecting on different types of challenges the expedition faced during that month. Did the weather cause any problems? Where there any animal encounters that proved harmful (e.g. Snakes)? Traveling accidents? Incidents with fellow man? 2. In Source 2: Captain Lewis's Medicine Bag, students are asked on which item did Lewis spend the most money? (Peruvian Bark) But Peruvian Bark was not the most expensive per pound. Have students calculate what each item cost per pound. Then ask them to figure out which items were the most expensive per pound. 3. After students have thought about and listed different medical supplies they would take on a month-long hiking trip, ask them to prepare for homework a first-aid kit that they could use while hiking.

Benjamin Rush Grave at Historic Christ Church Burial Ground
Burial grounds are now open to the public. Tour Groups must use Online Reservation Form. Monday through Saturday, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Sunday, 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM, Weather permitting. Cost: Visiting the Burial Ground is free (with a suggested donation of $2 adults and $1 students to help maintain the Burial Ground). 35-minute tours of the Burial Ground will be presented five times each day.

Pennsylvania Hospital
The oldest existing surgical amphitheater in the United States. Ben Franklin was a cofounder of this first hospital in America, founded in 1751. It was also the first hospital for the treatment of psychiatry in America. Its library exhibit contains historical collections on medical tools used around the early 1800s. Outside is an herb garden of plants used for medicinal purposes in the late eighteenth/early nineteenth centuries. The hospital tour is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm.
