Altoona Horseshoe Curve: A Vital Link

During Worlds War II, Pennsylvania's railroads were crowded with troops and freight. Some soldiers had a respite from their long trek by spending some time at the Connellsville Canteen. Assign students to read the "Behind the Marker" story for the [[hm]] World War II Connellsville Canteen [[/]] and explain the importance of this and similar rest stops to the morale of the soldier.

Field Trips

Horseshoe Curve Railroaders Heritage Corporation
Plan a field trip to the Historic Landmark the Horseshoe Curve to see first-hand the engineering feat and scenic setting. There is a visitors" center and a funicular (inclined-plane) to take you up to see the Horseshoe Curve. Also located about five miles away is the Altoona Railroaders Museum–where you can learn about Pennsylvania Railroads contribution to our nation's transportation infrastructure and production standardization. Pennsylvania 30th Street Station
The 30th Street Station in Philadelphia would not be your traditional field trip experience. However, given the content of this lesson plan, it would be appropriate to arrange a class visit there. After studying the photographs of the monument, students could experience Angel of Resurrection in its station context.
