Students could be assigned roles such as campaign manager who would choose speech locations, speech writer who would construct the candidate's message and publicist who would create buttons, posters and flyers to create enthusiasm for one or more of the locations. Students could contact local historical societies and read newspaper accounts from 1860 to research sentiments surrounding the election in specific parts of Pennsylvania. They should then report back to the class.
