Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal's photograph of GIs raising the American flag at Iwo Jima is one of the most famous and enduring images in American history. One of the six young men raising the flag that day was Michael Strank, a Czech-born Marine sergeant from Johnstown, PA.
