On August 29, 1889, the H.C. Frick Coke Company purchased the Mammoth Mines property from Colonel Moore. Asserting his absolute control over the mines and its coke ovens, Frick soon came into conflict with Moorewood's miners and coke workers. In 1891, 16,000 workers walked out for higher wages in the coke region, and Morewood became the site of a "massacre" that shook the nation.
