By the end of the American Revolutionary War, George Washington owned more than 58,000 acres in western Virginia and Pennsylvania, including 2,813 acres awarded to him by the British government for his service during the French and Indian War. In 1781 this parcel became part of the state's new Washington County, named in the general's honor.
