Promoted at 23 years old to brigadier general the day before the fighting at Hanover, Custer knew the best way to win the respect of his Michigan cavalry troopers was to lead from the front. His actions at Hanover during the Gettysburg Campaign would mark the beginning of one of the most fearless and daring cavalry careers on either side of the war.
