Linking the eastern and western sections of Pennsylvania's Main Line of Public Works, the Allegheny Portage Railroad carried the combination canal boat and rail cars across the summit of the Allegheny mountains. This picture depicts the top of plane #6, today the center of the Allegheny Portage National Historic Site, as it looked in the 1840s.
