In 1828 the Delaware and Hudson sent Horatio Allen to England to purchase a steam locomotive, something never before seen in the United States. After the Stourbridge Lion damaged the track on its very first American run, D&H dismantled the locomotive, then sold the boiler for use as a stationary engine. Although the Stourbridge Lion never did any useful work, it was the first locomotive ever operated in the U.S.
