In 1928, Polish artist Arthur Szyk created this illustration of the Statute of Kalisz, which affirmed the civil rights of Polish Jews in 1264. In it, he flanked St. George slaying the dragon–a symbol of the eternal struggle between good and evil–with portraits of Casimir Pulaski and Haym Salomon, who symbolized for Szyk and other Poles how human rights could be achieved by people of conviction and courage.
