Between the 1890s and 1930s Philadelphia's Italian population grew from under to 30,000 to more than 150,000 people. The highest concentration was in South Philadelphia, where Italians crowded into rowhouse neighborhoods and formed their own banks, cultural associations, and a broad range of businesses.
