In 1841, Timothy Shay (T. S.) Arthur moved to Philadelphia to be close to the magazines for which he wrote. There, he enjoyed a successful career as a writer and publisher. In 1854, Arthur published Ten Nights in a Bar-Room, a best-selling novel that dramatized the evils of alcohol. This 1858 edition was illustrated by John Sartain. Drawn to Philadelphia from England by its publishing companies, Sartain was for a while the nation’s most celebrated magazine illustrator, and for short a time published his own magazine in Philadelphia.
