Jewish merchants and soldiers first appeared on the western Pennsylvania frontier in the 1750s. Pittsburgh's Rodef Shalom, the oldest active Jewish Congregation in western Pennsylvania, was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1856. In 1908 the congregation moved into this new temple, designed by architect Henry Hornbostel.
