One of the first seed and nursery catalogue publishers to use color photographs, Harrisburg's J. Horace McFarland became an avid rosarian. From 1916 to his death in 1948, McFarland edited the American Rose Annual, wrote several books on roses, and helped make the rose the nation's most popular flower.
