An indifferent student, Zane Gray attended the University of Pennsylvania dental school on a baseball scholarship. A teetotaler, he socialized little and spent much of his free time on creative writing and poetry. After graduating, Grey played minor league baseball with several teams, including the Newark, New Jersey Colts, then played with the Orange Athletic Club in New Jersey, an outstanding amateur team of former collegiate players.
