In 1848, James Buchanan purchased "The Wheatlands," a house built in his hometown of Lancaster twenty years earlier by lawyer William Jenkins. Here, Buchanan wrote his memoirs after leaving the presidency in 1861, and here he died, at the age of seventy-seven, on June 1, 1868. Today, Wheatland is a historic house museum open to the public.
