Pittsburgh Courier editor Robert Vann's support of the Democratic party won him political appointments, including membership on Governor George Earle's Special Committee on Unemployment Relief, and a voice in government. Back in Pittsburgh, the Courier championed protests for racial equality, including Pittsburgh Urban League pickets who demanded fair employment in department stores and others businesses that catered to a black clientele.
