Alvin Kraenzlein (1876-1928), who pioneered a new straight-legged style of hurdling that helped him dominate the sport while at Penn, was John Tewksbury's roommate and fellow dental student. At the 1900 Olympics, Kraenzlein won four medals, two of them by beating Tewksbury in two events. In 1900, Kraenzlein held six world records. Giving up dentistry, he began a long career as a track and field coach at Mercersburg Academy in south central Pennsylvania.
