Incorporated as a borough in 1863, Mahanoy City sits in the valley of Mahanony Creek, about 1,240 above sea level in the anthracite coal region of northeast Pennsylvania. A center of anthracite coal production in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was served by branches of the Lehigh Valley and the Philadelphia and Reading railways.
