The stone, from Devil's Den at the Gettysburg battlefield, was placed in Clark Park in 1916 to commemorate the 4,500-bed Satterlee U.S. Army Hospital which stood on the site and was the largest and most complete U.S. Army hospital in the world during the Civil War. At least 60,000 sick and wounded soldiers from the battles of Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvanis, etc. were treated there. A Veterans Day Commemoration takes place there annually.
