Discovering and Covering the Battle of Homestead
Background Information for Teachers

There are a number of resources within the ExplorePAHistory website to learn more about the Homestead Strike. For three slightly different perspectives and aspects of the event see the following three Behind the Historical Marker Pages:

markerBost Building [1892 Homestead Strike]
markerHomestead Strike
markerHomestead Strike Victims

For a more detailed version of the events, see the following original documents in our "Making Steel" Story:

First Shot-Homestead Strike
After the Battle = Homestead Strike

Originally published in 1893 by Pittsburgh journalist's Arthur Burgoyne, these documents offer a well-told and surprisingly unbiased version of events. In the lesson, they are recommended as homework reading for the class.

Three of the four chapters in the "Making Steel" story relate directly to Homestead. For more historical context of the topic, you may wish to browse:

Chapter 1: Masters and Men
Chapter 2: Steel City and Mill Towns
Chapter 3: Building a Union

Finally, a highly recommended source for background information for this lesson is the video link of The Battle of Homestead in the Media portion of this story.
