Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site 110 Federal Park Road Gallitzin, PA 16641 814-886-6150
The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site tells the story of the Allegheny Portage Railroad, an engineering feat of its day. Operating from 1834-1854, the railroad crossed the obstacle of the Alleghenies to open interior trade to the country. This railroad–consisting of ten inclined-planes–cut travel time considerably from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. The historic site is located where Incline #6 once busily hauled boats and cargo over the mountain. It includes the old engine house and the Lemon House, a nearby tavern, as well as the visitor's center. Educational programs are available, and pre-visit activities as well as lesson activities are offered on the website. Call educational staff for further information.
