Plants for Pleasure and Profit
Extensions

1. Develop a herbarium collection of local plants. Teach students how to collect, press, and mount plants. Help them identify the plant using a key or plant identification book, then label the sample with the plant's name, location, date of discovery, and collector. In the case of garden plants, research the plant origin. 2. Generate a list of animals discovered by Lewis and Clark, for example grizzly bear, prairie dog, ermine, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, Lewis' woodpecker, western rattlesnake, etc. Have students work in similar groups to rank order animal discoveries. 3. Make a list of all products in the classroom (or students' homes) that are plant-based. From the list, develop a list of economically important plants. Research from where these plants came originally.
