Muddy Waters: A Historical View of Land Use Patterns, Water Quality, and the Conservation Movement
Extensions

Have students consider the concept of "air sheds" as well as "watersheds" in their study of water quality. Discuss the problems associated with pollution such as acid rain or potential radioactive fallout. Obtain aerial photographs of the local watershed and identify land use patterns and their possible effects on water quality. These photographs are often available through the local County Conservation District office or though state transportation studies.
