Ask students to explain why the Conestoga wagon was called the "Ship of Inland Commerce," including a paragraph about each of the following using facts they learned in the study of the Conestoga: 1. Compare the Conestoga wagon to the Mayflower that brought the Pilgrims to the New World. 2. Describe the Conestoga wagon and team, what it carried, and where it was going. 3. Write one entry for a journal describing what the day was like from the point of view of the wagoner. Include how fast you were traveling and your tavern stay at night. 4. Tell how the wagon improved trade between the eastern and western part of the state.
