Protesting that their three-year enlistments were up, nearly half of the 2,500 men in the Pennsylvania Line in the Continental Army mutinied from their camp at Morristown, New Jersey on January 1, 1781. Intending to march on the Continental Congress at Philadelphia and demand back pay, the mutineers traveled to Princeton, New Jersey, where they met with President Joseph Reed of the Pennsylvania Executive Council, who agreed to terms that ended the mutiny.
