In the 1830s and 1840s, Quaker lay minister Edward Hicks completed a series of idealized paintings of the bounty and orderliness of the farms of southeastern Pennsylvania. In this 1849 painting of the Leedom farm of Bucks County, Hicks pictured livestock that would have been the envy of farmers elsewhere in the United States.
