A native of Ireland and a graduate of Dublin University where he studied medicine, Dr. William Irvine left the British Navy and in 1764 settled in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Commander of American troops on the northwestern frontier during the last years of the American Revolution, Irvine was the logical choice to survey lands in western Pennsylvania for donation to men who had served during the War for Independence.
