A native of York, PA, Lieutenant General Jacob Devers was commander of U. S. forces in the Mediterranean theater when he presented the Medal of Honor to Ernest Childers in 1944. Four months later he would see his first combat of the war when he led the American, French, and British troops that landed on France's south coast in Operation Dragoon.
