Born in Czechoslovakia, Michael Strank grew up in Johnstown, PA, and joined the Marine Corp in 1939. A veteran of the Battle of Bougainville, Strank was killed soon after helping place the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
