The governor of Pennsylvania from 1943 to 1947, Edward Martin was a military man from head to toe. Wounded in France during World War I as a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard's 28th Division, Martin remained associated with the 28th Division until his retirement from the military in 1942. While still governor, Martin in 1946 won election to the United States Senate, in which he became an outspoken anti-Communist.
