In 1966, John E. Allen, Jr. opened the New Freedom Theatre in the former home of famed actor Edwin Forrest. Not long afterwards, Robert E. Leslie joined the Theater and in 1971 began its Performing Arts Training Program. Deeply rooted in the African-American tradition, Freedom Theater's world-class repertoire company has debuted plays by August Wilson and other African American playwrights.
