After deciding to build a new mill and steel town downriver from Apollo, McMurty visited industrial villages in France, Germany, and Russia for ideas, then hired famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to design his new town. McMurtry requirements included the installation of sewers, water mains, and gas lines, the naming of streets after patriotic themes, and the reduction of lot sizes to maximize the number of saleable houses.
