Gallitzin was deeply influenced by his Catholic mother, the Countess Amalie, only daughter of the famed Prussian Field-Marshal von Schmettau. Indeed, he converted to Catholicism on August 28, 1787, the day of his mother's birth, marriage, and First Holy Communion.
