The second African American to play in the National League, Roy Campanella was the complete ballplayer. A feared hitter, he was one of the best defensive catchers of his day. In 1942, Campanella was playing for the Baltimore Elite Giants, which had the best rest record that year in the Negro National League. Campanella was 26 years old when he began playing with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 20, 1948.
