In 1892, skilled steel roller Hugh O'Donnell led the striking Homestead workers. When the strike faltered, O'Donnell alienated himself from his co-workers by making conciliatory proposals to the company. After the strike, O'Donnell found himself blacklisted, despite his work to negotiate an end to the strike and the violence.
