A Democrat with southern sympathies, Rice opposed Lincoln's prosecution of the Civil War, and in the early 1860s supported a negotiated settlement to the war with the retention of slavery. In 1864, with his show business career on the wane, Rice lost a race for state senator in the Erie district.
