Long a haven to people fleeing religious and political persecution in Europe, Pennsylvania in the 1790s continued to attract refugees from Europe, including French Royalists, German separatists, and famed British scientist and political radical Joseph Priestley. This drawing, made by T. Lambourne in 1800, guided curators in their restoration of the house that Priestly built for his family in Northumberland, now a museum administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
