Pittsburgh watercolor, 1817.

Born as a trading post built around Fort Pitt during the French and Indian War, Pittsburgh boasted more than 1,500 residents, 60 shops, and the first newspaper west of the Alleghenies. By 1817 it was already Pennsylvania's gateway to the west.
