Joseph Priestley spent the final ten years of his life in Pennsylvania, splitting his time between Philadelphia and property he purchased in Northumberland, alongside the Susquehanna River. In 1961, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania acquired Priestley's Northumberland residence and began a lengthy and ongoing process of restoration. Open to the public, the Joseph Priestley House museum is operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
