Pennsylvanian George Catlin was the first American artist to paint Indians where they lived and worked, rather than in an artist's studio. In this painting, Catlin showed how Plains Indians hunted buffalo in the winter by driving them into snow banks. Note the snowshoes worn by the Indian hunters.
